Block Island, Martha's Vineyard or stay in Newport

We are planning a vacation to Newport. We have a hotel reserved for 6 nights. We are planning to see the mansions and do the cliff walk. We will go to the beach some. We have three teenagers and they like to explore. What are your recommendations for a day trip from Newport? Should we try the ferry to Block Island or Martha's Vineyard? As a family we enjoy hiking and spending time outsides. We can pass on shopping and restaurants. Also, is anyone familiar where we could rent a motor boat for 1/2 to one day? Thanks in advance.

I think of you go to Block Island you'll have more time on the island and less on the ferry - and if you're interested in biking/hiking, BI would be your best choice.

Totally agree with CTMom. Block island is your hiking/biking destination. While there are shops and restaurants also, there are no chain stores, with the exception of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, so even that is lower key than Martha's Vineyard. You can find bikes or mopeds almost the moment you get off the ferry. Plenrty of beaches also.

Enjoy!!
