Sunday or Monday

Hi all,

I am travelling through in a few weeks- the Savannah to Charleston route, which appears a well-beaten path. I definitely want to stop in Beaufort along the way. I found a post about going through on Sunday, which amazingly enough closed TODAY due to inactivity! Which would anyone recommend - a one day trip on Sunday or staying Sunday night and having Monday to finish up what I wasnt able to see.

There wasn't much mention if the business/sites are open Sunday, but I will look at that post for more info.

Any other suggestions are great.

Hi ozbound,

I would suggest staying a night on Sunday and trying out one of Beaufort's bed and breakfasts or hotels in downtown. While some shops are closed, there will be shops that are open, but perhaps on a limited schedule (afternoon hours and such). Some restaurants may be closed too, but some of the better ones will be open (Breakwater, Bricks, Emily's, Plums, etc).

If I were breaking up the day for you, I would check out Hunting Island State Park on Sunday afternoon - head out there and enjoy it. It's less than 20 minutes from town and you can relax by the beach, on a hiking trail, or on the marsh boardwalk.

Monday morning, you can walk around the town or take a guided walking or carriage tour through the historic district. Most shops downtown open up at 9:30 or 10:00, with most restaurants open for lunch around 11. You can grab breakfast at Blackstones or Palm & Moon bagel, or just stick with coffee and pastries at City Java or Common Ground.

I'll be happy to give you more information about visiting town; feel free to send me a private message or you can just respond here. If you haven't already, check out the "1 day in Beaufort" page below:

City Loft Hotel and Rhett House Inn would be a good choice for a place to stay. Go to Plums or Saltus River for good food.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into all these places. I am leaning towards spending a night in town. I don't want to rush through. I see a lot about old Sheldon Church ruins and am planning to do Jon Sharps walking tour.

Any opinion about a buggy tour? The restaurants look great, lots to decide!

The carriage tours operate on the same route at 30 minute intervals. Whichever company you decide (Southurn Rose or Sea Island), you should be getting a good tour. However, Jon's tours are quite popular and I would suggest more fun. Be sure to check out his website... not sure about his touring schedule.

Hope you enjoy your time here, and feel free to message me with any further questions you may have!

5. Re: Sunday or Monday

My plan is 4 days in Charleston, 1 1/2 in Beaufort, a stop in Hilton Head (1 day in passing) and 3 days Savannah. Does this seem like enough time in each place?

I ALWAYS find more to do than I have time for, but this seems like a good breakdown...

Stay at Rhett House Inn in Beaufort. You will enjoy a night and a day in historic Beaufort. The water view at Saltus Grill is outstanding. Plums is on Bay Street and it's fun too. Kathleen's is great fine dining for lunch or dinner. You will really enjoy your visit. Good luck.

Kathleen's is closed, Axle. Bricks on Boundary ($$) or Breakwater ($$$) are good substitutes.

Rhett House is a wonderful place. I like the Cuthbert House Inn as well. It's a little less expensive and has views of the water from some rooms.
