april or august?

We are planning to explore south carolina, maybe you could assist me a little, At Easter is it warm enough to swim in the sea and play on the beach? In August, I know it will be extremely humid, so would be unbearable to walk around charleston, but fine on the beach ? Thanks for your help, I am so looking forward to visiting s c!!

I would choose April for sightseeing in Charleston.

April is generally beautiful. The gardens are in bloom, and air temperatures are pleasant for all outdoor activities. You will enjoy the sun on the beach; however, the ocean water will still be very cool. My daughter, who lives in England, thinks the water is fine in April, but many people find it too cold.

August is hot and humid. The ocean water will be extremely warm. Tropical storms, including hurricanes, are possible.

If I had to pick, I'd say early August. Yes it's hot and can be humid, but at the beach there is always a breeze and the water is delightful. Just schedule your day accordingly and wear comfortable clothing and shoes! Early Aug and there is usually less of a worry re: hurricanes.

I agree w/Villa, we love April & May in Charleston, the summer heat hasn't picked up yet, the days are getting longer, it's absolutely beautiful.

August will be a little cooler at the beach than in town, but we've found at that time of year, even if there are hurricanes out at sea, if the wind is blowing the wrong way, there may be biting black flies on the beaches, much as we love the beach, the flies are not fun!!!

Regardless, of the time you choose, your trip to the Charleston area will be wonderful!!!

thanks for imput, I was thinking of fripp island, but although it seems wonderful, maybe a little too remote, I feel like I would like a week there doing nothing, but should be somewhere a little more active to see more things.....IOP or HH?

Belgium,

Here's something to add to the "confusion" :-) Staying in a vacation rental during August will require that you rent by the week (usually Saturday to Saturday).

If you choose April as your travel month, you may be able to rent for less than a week. Unless you pick the week of Easter and the week before Easter--these, too, usually require weekly rentals only.

Weren't you making this "THE" trip--visiting other destinations as well as SC? I seem to recall New Orleans (maybe I'm confusing you with another poster). If New Orleans is another one of your cities to visit, you want to visit in April NOT August.

New Orleans' summer humidity is way worse than anything you'll experience in SC.

Honestly I haven't seen black flies on the beach at IOP or Sullivan's at any time. Maybe it's the breeze - or that we are usually constantly walking or sitting with our chairs in the water...??? that might help.

august it is!

it's a long way, so want to experience it all, thats why i am a little concerned that fripp might be too isolated, iop might make eating out,...got to try as many ice cream flavours as possible!!!and good southern food easier, but fripp does sound dreamy!

Fripp is very isolated and a loooooooong way away from restaurants, shops etc. The beach is very different from IOP, too. I prefer IOP and it feels isolated without being too far away to run to a nice restaurant or go see a movie at night etc.
