Where to go in the deep south?

Hello,

I would love to hear any recomendations anyone has for a quaint area in Georgia, South Carolina or North Carolina. We are a family of 6 ladies including one (spry but not athletic) senior citizen. We are not interested in sports or beaches for this trip. Ideally we would be able to visit 1-3 places and are interested in historic areas, (especially large estates), shopping and good restaurants and walking tours. We are planning on a 5 day trip in July.

A base in a larger city like Savannah or Charleston with the ability to do daytrips would be ideal but not necessary. At this point we are very flexible and just want to hear what your ideal trip would be!

Thanks!

Sounds like 2 days in Asheville NC and 3 days in Charleston is about perfect!

I second that. Easy 4 hour drive between cities.

While staying in Charleston there are tons of historic things to visit. A number of old plantations/gardens that are an hour or less away. Mepkin Abbey - a monastery that can be toured. Lots of beautiful architecture everywhere. Good shopping, both upscale and not so upscale. FABULOUS FOOD all around. Easy drive out to a beach for an early morning or late afternoon walk, if you wish.

Asheville, of course, has the beautiful Biltmore House and grounds - good for a full day of exploring. Also has a somewhat quirky downtown area to explore.
