Holiday Season (and first trip) In Charleston

My family (two adults and two teenage girls) are going to be in Charleston from the 20 to 23 of December and staying at the French Quarter Inn. Does anyone have recommendations for fun things (seasonal or not) to do? Restaurants near our hotel? We were thinking of going and seeing a couple of movies on evenings where we're tired of walking around. Is there a certain theater you'd recommend?

Any advice, or ideas would be deeply appreciated!

How nice. Welcome.

. We always recommend a carriage ride first ( the teens will think it's lame, but they'll like it) to see what appeals to you. There are many restaurants within walking distance to FQI. I like High Cotton,

FIG,

Jestines,and 82 Queen.

Others will have other recs. Do avoid any restaurant that has people standing outside hawking.

Skip the movies. It's Charleston. Drive out to the beach so you can enjoy going over the Ravenel Bridge.

Y'all have fun.

First of all the ladies on the board will give you FAR better advice than me. Just a few suggestions.

1. Go shopping in Charleston at the Market. Your teens will love this. Not so sure about the male in the group LOL.

2. Take a 20 minute drive out to Folly Beach. Drive to the north end of the island and take the short hike to view the Morris Island Lighthouse. Walk the beach back to your car. Have lunch at one of the funky beach restaurants. We like Taco Boy and Crab Shack.

3. Have lunch at Shems Creek. Great view of the creek and the shrimp boats. Makes for some great pics. Hope you like seafood.

4. For a real different dining expierence try Bowans Island Restaurants near Folly Beach. It is a lot of fun and get the clams. Here is the website. Go at sunset.

Slight typo, I meant Bowen's and get the OYSTERS. They are great this time of year.

Yes, like Shankle said, skip the movies, plenty to do otherwise. Do drive out to the beach, kids might like the Folly Beach area, lots of t-shirt shops there.

Carriage ride is a must, your daughters will probably enjoy just walking around town looking and shopping. There are tons of galleries, visit the churches that are decorated for the holidays, many of the hotel lobbies are decorated, as well. My 26 yr. old son will be w/us when we get down there next week and he enjoys just wandering around the Historic District.

You didn't say if the kids enjoy museums, galleries and the like, tons of them (Provost Dungeon is a good tour).

Make sure you take the time to go out to see the lights at James Island Park, have dinner at either Mustard Seed or Boulevard Diner on the way back to town (go early, like 5:30).

Enjoy your holiday visit to Charleston!

I actually don't know of any movie theaters in Charleston's historic district. Bring or rent some DVD's, or check the listings on pay-per-view.

We've had this situation in London (tired feet, etc!) and have always found something worth watching on the "tele". Piling on the bed to watch a movie in your PJ's is a nice family activity. Order room service, and relax. ;-)
