Took the board's advice and visited the Old SheldonChurch ruins on the way from Savannah up to Charleston...not easy to locate, but well worth the effort...very good for photo opps. Left the ruins around 9:15am...made a beeline for the USS Yorktown, arriving at Patriot's Point at 11am.
The USS Yorktown aircraft carrier was fantastic. The tours are self-guided. Walked thru several of the 6 tours + the submarine in 2 hours...highlight was the flight deck of the Yorktown. Could easily have spent another 2 hours here.
Next stop: Middleton Place...toured the gardens and grounds pretty well in 3 hours, (including the House Tour)...would really be nice to see this area in spring when the azaleas are in bloom. The famous aerial shot of the terraced gardens does not translate to what one sees on the ground. Was able to see a cooper at work in the stable area...lots of local history to be learned from a visit to Middleton Place.
Back to the city...for dinner at Jestine's Kitchen...meatloaf, okra, fries + fried green tomatoes + coca-cola cake...good stuff!
A very productive day...in my initial planning, did not anticipate time for Patriot's Point, but sure was glad to have seen it....now, can focus on the Historic District for Day 2.
