Folly Beach is the location where alot of surfing is done, is also done on both Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms. Supposedly, Folly has better waves.

In Mt. Pleasant (close to IOP and Sullivan's) is Parrot Surf Shop www.parrotsurfshop.com

Folly Beach has McKevlin's and Ocean surf shops.

Don't really know if any of them do rentals.

If you really love surfing, go to the Outer Banks in NC. Huge waves. But you have to bring your own board.

Folly Beach is by far your best bet, both for rentals and waves. McKevlin's definitely rents both surfboards and boogieboards.

In my experience the wave sets out at IOP or Sullivan's are generally too small to make it worth your while to even take a board out there. I had a Charleston buddy who was an avid surfer and would always bring his board out to visit us on IOP, but only once can I remember that the wave sets were actually good enough for him to catch any decent rides.

Folly Beach, specifically The Washout at the end of East Artic Avenue is the best place for waves in Charleston.

IOP is better than Sullivan's, you will often find surfers near 25th Avenue.
