Where are you staying. The streets in Charleston are not good running streets like most cities. One route you might like is the Cooper River Bridge and back route. Here's a link to some routes. Charleston is a good walking city though. The area near the battery is a good place to visit. Charleston has some outstanding restaurants. The Market is fun. Bay Street has some neat shops and bars. Enjoy your visit.

I think the best biking and running spots are on the beach. It's really flat here, so if you want to hike up a hill, use the path on the Ravenel Bridge.

Axle, it is East Bay Street. There is no Bay Street nor is there a West Bay Street. The street is named thusly because it runs beside the bay that is on the east side of the peninsula. I am sure with all your visits here that you know that but must have forgotten.

You will enjoy running or walking the Ravenal Bridge. It has a separate lane completely walled off from the vehicular traffic and the view at the top is spectacular!

Soon! Excellent. The weather is a little chilly right now, for us anyway. It might make you laugh coming from Chicago.

You'll have a bit of a walk to get down to the Battery. The sidewalks can be difficult to maneuver with a stroller. They can be bumpy.

Take a carriage ride first thing. You'll be able to get your bearings, and learn your way around the Historic District.

The Visitors' Center is near your hotel. There is lots of great information there that will help you decide what to do.

Historic downtown Charleston is more about the great sight seeing than about outdoor activities like running, biking, etc. Walk in nearly any direction for beautiful homes and buildings to look at, there are art galleries and museums to tour. The Charleston Museum focuses on the local history and includes some musuem homes that you can tour. Waterfront Park and the Battery are lovely areas to walk. The entire area is really flat, so "hiking" per se, is really only walking. The only hills to be had are the inclines of bridges.

A carriage ride is a lovely and informative way to get an overview of downtown.

Yes, if you can get to one of the local beaches and rent a bike (w/a trailer for the little guy), that is absolutely the best biking!!!

Running in the HD is a bit tricky w/old sidewalks and cobblestones. There are quite a few runners usually down in the Battery area, make sure you wait until after "rush" hour.

Do the carriage ride first thing as Shankle suggested. You might also enjoy the harbor tour. Make sure you have a fleece jacket and a waterproof breathable jacket, you will need them alternately this week and possibly both, if you do the harbor tour.
