Stay at Charleston AFB Hard drive to Historic area/Downto

I am thinking about Staying at the Air Base and then trying to see the normal touristy sights ... is the travel difficult between the two areas?

Unfortunately, it can be congested between the Base and the Historic District during the times you'll likely want to travel. If you wait until 1000 to leave, and plan on leaving the HD around 1500, it won't be so bad.

MWR on the base does frequent tours for reasonable prices. You may want to contact their office and see if they'll be doing that during your visit.

You might also consider eating dinner in the HD before returning to the AFB. It is not in the most desirable part of town.

That's a good idea. There are restaurants up there, but the ones in the HD are one of the reasons people love to come here!

Thanks Shanklemsw and SCBlossom ... I was thinking about spending the most of the day and evening in the HD and just sleeping on the AFB. Rooms are so expensive in Charleston ... I wouldn't mind $100-$200 per night for the right place but those are few and far between. A friend mention staying at Kiawah island ... ?

Is this your first trip? If so, I recommend you just stay in the HD. It's a 20 mile drive in each direction. Kiawah is a little farther, and the only hotel is a resort that won't fit that budget.

Plug your dates into kayak.com and see what pops up. Then come back here with what you find, and we'll help you narrow it down.

I went to VRBO.com and they had rentals from $100 and up ... Just wasn't sure if Kiawah Island was an option. Went to Kayak ... $250 and up fast ... in the HD.

Kiawah is about a 45 minute drive from the HD. Beautiful, green island, but if it's Charleston you want to see and you can swing it to stay in the HD, that's the place to stay.

If you seriously think about renting on Kiawah, Villa and I can give you guidance.

Have you considered staying just across the Ravenal Bridge in Mount Pleasant, if HD hotels are out of your budget? After a first visit when we stayed in the HD, we usually stay in Mt Pleasant. For the last several years we have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express (NOT the Holiday Inn!) on Route 17 at the foot of the bridge. Great rooms, great staff, acceptable breakfast, and great pricing. It is a quick and easy shot into the HD, no charge for parking at the HDE, and a number of good restaurants on the East Cooper side if you want something a little more casual one night.

You don't say when you are coming...certain events can really drive up the cost of hotel rooms and also have everything book out in advance. So that makes a difference, also, in the summer months most condos/homes will rent for only 1 week time periods.

Mt. Pleasant is a good option - depending on the exact location. There is heavy road construction going on in Mt. P, making traffic in some areas horrendous. Anything close to Patriot's Point would be fine.
