You do not need to rent a car. There will be shuttle services and taxis outside the baggage claim area of the airport. Most people walk around the historical district. Charleston is very walkable and most cars stay parked.

There are bicycle rentals but I would not recommend trying to bike in the HD. It can be dangerous with the traffic and the narrow streets. The topic of bicycle dangers has been discussed on this board numerous times.

You might enjoy one of the pedicabs that is peddled by college students.

Not a great city for bikes, very narrow streets and traffic. You can rent a bike to ride across the bridge for fun but stick to walking around the downtown area.

I highly recommend comfortable shoes as the sidewalks are old and not always even. You can also get around a bit with the trolly - bus service. ridecarta.com/riding-carta/routesmapsschedul…
