Public Transportation

Can we get around the city with public transport, or do we definitely have to rent a car to see all the sights?

If you want to see things in the historic district you can walk or take the trolley. If you want to go to plantations, the beach, Angel Oak, etc you will need a car for that. If you are more specific, we can tell you which things will require transportation.

Public transportation here is notoriously unreliable and does not go to the plantations and other areas.

The historic district is very walkable. If you get tired you can take any of the previously mentioned plus the pedicabs which are fun. Most people who bring their cars park them until they are ready to leave town unless they go to a plantation or to the beach. Just be sure that your hotel is in the HD and not Downtown.

If you are planning to rent a car, you might just rent one just for the day that you plan to use it. Enterprise delivers it to your hotel.
