Dog Friendly?

We are visiting the week after Christmas and will be bringing our well behaved golden retriever with us. We ALWAYS have him on the leash. Staying at the Residence Inn so just a little drive away. We know Charleston is a walking city so looking forward to doing that. But what tourist attractions are specifically dog friendly? I heard that the Audabon Swamp is dog friendly?

Are there restrictions for dogs on leashes on any of the beaches?

Obviously we know dogs can't go inside any historic buildings but anything else people can share with us?

And yes we do always poop and scoop. Laws where we live too.

Thanks in advance.

All the beaches have dog restrictions of one kind or another, mostly about hours. Visit the various town websites for breakdowns: Folly Beach, Sullivans Island, Isle of Palms, Edisto Beach. Beidler Forest is the Audubon Society's swampland about an hour from Charleston. Better check their website - public access is via a long boardwalk, might be boring for the dog.

My dog enjoys wandering around the residential historic district. Plenty to see and smell. Along all the shopping streets you'll find dog-friendly stores whose owners put out water bowls. These people will have suggestions for restaurants/cafes with outdoor areas so your dog can watch you eat.

Waterfront Park is a nice place to sniff and wander. All dogs love White Point Garden at the Battery, and off-leash is allowed. Off-leash is technically not allowed at Hampton Park, but plenty of us do it. The north end of Brittlebank Park on Lockwood Blvd is an off-leash dog area. There are also fenced dog playgrounds here and there (on Rutledge Avenue/Grove Street near Hampton Park, at Hazel Parker Playground on South Adgers Wharf off East Bay Street). A lot of downtown adults are with their dogs at Hazel Parker and White Point from 5 to 6PM, and you'd have a chance to meet and talk with locals.

Important note: historic church cemeteries don't welcome dogs (too much potential for destruction), but Magnolia Cemetery allows them.

If you look to the top right of this page you will see Top Questions about Charleston. Within that is a question Which beach is best? ~ that will give you a run down of the dog laws on various beaches.
