Summer vacation in Charleston, SC

Hi we are planning a small family vacation to Charleston, SC. Our son is 14 and we will be arriving 8/4 thru 8/9 via Amtrack from VA. We are looking for some suggestion on what to do, where to stay, taxi service or public transit, night life & dining.

Ive done a little research on Charleston and it seems there is more to do in South Charleston then in lieu of North Charleston? meaning most of the action is more towards the Atlantic ocean.

We're thinking around $100-120/night for room. We like shopping, sightseeing, museums, walking/bus/cruise tours, beach, Aquarium, & zoos. We are always open to try something new though. Dining we like seafood, & basically American cuisine & of course sweets :) but again will venture out of our comfort zone for something new.

The hardest part for me when planning a trip is finding a good, clean hotel/room which is near most of the action and then grasping an understanding of the distance we would need to travel from there to each destination. I would appreciate your comments &/or suggestion and thank you in advance.

Your research is correct. You don't want to stay in N. Charleston unless you have a car. Public transportation exists, but it's not always reliable. For the short amount of time you plan to visit, you'll want to stay in the Historic District. I plugged your dates into kayak.com and the Francis Marion came up at $119. It's the only one in your budget in the HD.

Read through the top questions on the right. You'll get lots of recemmendations for tours and things to do.

It will be just as hot here as it is in Chesapeake so plan for that.

The first thing you should do is read over the "Top Questions about Charleston" section on the right side of this page. This will give you lots of info on what to see and do, restaurants, areas of town, etc.

North Charleston is not where you want to be. There is nothing historic or scenic there (for the most part). Some areas are not particularly safe.

Ideally, you would want to stay in the historic district downtown. You would be able to walk to most restaurants, historic sites, etc. You would not need a car unless you wish to go to the beach or the plantations. If you stay in any other part of town, you will need to rent a car. Public transportation here is not the most reliable or readily available.

Your budget is low for Charleston, it is very unlikely that you will find anything in that price range in the historic district. Anywhere that you can find that price range, you will need to rent a car. So you may want to consider increasing the budget.

Just a heads up about the Francis Marion . . . the rooms are very small. If you book today, Orbitz has 15% off their hotel rates. The code is PREZ15.

We (two senior ladies) booked the Days Inn @ 155 Meeting, it's right in the smack dab middle of the HD and very near the market. We can and will walk to everything. Our rate with taxes is $149 and we have a room w/2 double beds.

This will be our second trip to Charleston, it is fabulous and you will love it!

That's an excellent rate for the Francis Marion. I would book it. I have not found the rooms to be very small in the Francis M. The bathrooms, yes, but not the rooms. But since it is an old hotel, room sizes may vary quite a bit.

People who are used to newer hotels sometimes have trouble with room size in either historic buildings or really urban ones, where the real estate is at a premium. For a big room/suite, Charleston Place or Renovation on King will work, but NOT for $120 a night!
