Help - need advice from locals on our 3 day trip plan

We will have a short stay in Charleston during the second week in April 2013. I have 3 high schoolers. One would love to visit a beach. We've never been to Charleston and the kids are worried that they will be bored. Do you think this schedule is do-able?

Me (the mom) would like to visit a plantation. Any recommendations?

Day 1: Drive from Pigeon Forge to Charleston. Hope to arrive around 2:00pm at the hotel. We plan to have dinner with friends in Mt. Pleasant. We are staying in the West Ashley area. What can we do before dinner (approx 6:30).

Day 2: Historic District, Farmers market, Battery Park, King Street

Day 3: Sullivan’s Island, Fort Moutrie, Bigelow Tea Plantation, Angel Tree Oak

Day 4: Leaving Charleston for Charlotte to catch 7:00pm flight. Do we have time to do anything in Charleston or sites to visit during our drive to the Charlotte airport?

Mount Pleasant has great shopping areas...the beaches in the area are beautiful...tea plantation is a wonderful, interesting sight, and just driving to that has lovely scenery; horse ranches. In Charleston do take the buggy tour of the area...you will hear all the local lore & history. ENJOY!

If you like sweeping views go to Middleton. If you want to see an original house go to Drayton. If you want to see beautiful gardens go to Magnolia. I don't see a plantation on your itinerary.

I would take a tour the first day if you have time. There will be traffic between you and Mt. Pleasant.

Is Day 2 a Saturday? The farmer's market is only open on Sats.

As stated on your other thread, there is little between Charleston and Charlotte.

Why do your kids think they will be bored? Tell them the College of Charleston is in the HD and college kids will be all over King St. If you get them to help you plan, they will be less concerned.

Day 3 is crazy...Sullivans Island is about as far as you can get from Angel Oak and Tea Plantation. Add in Middleton Plantation for a morning and visit Angel Oak and Tea Plantation in the afternoon...lunch at one of the little local joints, maybe Sunrise Bistro, JB's Smokeshack or Tomato Shed at the Stono Market.

You will need to allow a minimum of 30 min to drive from West Ashley to Mt. Pleasant, realistically, I would allow 40. If you are going during rush hour, could be an hour. I agree that Day 3 does not make sense, the attractions are too far apart. If you get an early start, you could go to a plantation before driving to Charlotte.

The drive from Pigeon Forge to Charleston is a all day trip. The mountain roads can be very slow and there is often tourist congestion in many of the mountain towns. If you get into town in time, you might take a carriage ride then shop in The Market until time to head to Mt P.

I agree with rethinking day 3. Middleton Place is beautiful and has something of interest to all ages.

Depending on what time you get here on day 1, you could visit Sullivan's Island in the afternoon before meeting your friends in Mt. Pleasant. It's a quick hop from the Island to Mt. P. That would leave day 3 open for one of the plantations, which makes sense because you'll be a lot closer to Tea Plantation & Angel Oak.
