Driving to Charleston from Michigan for 2 nights in June. This is our first time to the area. Would love to stay in the Historic District, but it's a little steep for our budget (up to $150 per night). Any suggestions on the next best area to stay which might be a little cheaper, but safe and relatively close to downtown Charleston? Thanks!

Try just across the bridge in Mt. Pleasant. A number of newer, chain hotels over there.

I wouldn't give up your search on HD hotels quite yet. June is a popular month, but it's also hot enough to keep many would-be visitors away. I've seen a decent amount of hotel rates in the $150 range for June the past few years. Keep your eyes peeled. And yes, Mt. Pleasant is the next best thing.

Place I've seen $150 rates in June that is worth staying at: Andrew Pinckney Inn. I've seen it as low as $109 during the summer.

I found Harborview Inn at $150 a night in July a couple of years ago on Bookit.com. Also, I've signed up for alerts on Priceline for 4 star hotels that bid under $100 and I get one at least once or twice a week so it's possible to get a nice hotel in the historic district if you're on a budget. I would say most of the wins are last minute and the sales I have found are 4-6 weeks before the date of travel.

I have gotten some good deals on www.kayak.com

Also, there is a Days Inn on Meeting Street on the HD.
