Charleston for the first time

Hi, I will be traveling to Charleston in late June with a group of 6 girls. We are staying at the Historic District. We are probably going to rent a car for one day in order to see a plantation and the beach.

Any recommendations on restaurants and things to do downtown?

Also, which plantation and beach is the best since we wont have enough time to visit all.

Please start your information quest off by reading through the Top Questions on the upper right of this page. You'll get some ideas, then be able to ask us specific questions. Read through prior posts regarding restaurant suggestions or tell us more about what you are looking for and what you want to spend.

Unfortunately the plantations are in one direction, beaches in the other. I would guess the most efficient use of your time would be to head to Middleton Plantation first thing in the morning, then make your way to Folly Beach in the afternoon. There are plenty of places for lunch when you get to Folly, as well as a bunch of T-shirt shop type places to wander through. The County Park will not have reopened by then, so you'll just have to cruise the street to find a place to park (please don't go on the weekend!!!).

You should probably first take a look at the links on the right side of this page. There you will find lots of information about things to do.

I like Drayton Hall for the house, Middleton for the vistas and Magnolia for the gardens. It really depends on what interests you.

The closest beach to Charleston is Sullivans Island. My favorite is Isle of Palms. Again, it depends on what you like.

My first recommendation is to go to Middleton Place early in the morning. The grounds open at 9 am. Be sure to take a house tour. They have a great restaurant for lunch then head to the beach afterwards.

Check out which beach is best under the top things to do in Charleston.

SNOBS, Magnolias and Jestines are good choices. SNOBS has a great and less expensive lunch menu.

Again, please read through some of the prior posts about restaurants. Just about all the restaurants in the Historic District serve "Lowcounty" cuisine, each putting their own particular spin on the various dishes.

Lowcountry dishes will be served with lots of local veggies, whatever is in season, as well as locally sourced meats and seafood.

If you're talking fried chicken and that sort of thing, try Jestines (but go early to avoid a wait).
