Visiting Savannah and Charleston November 23 - 29, 2013. What is the best place/location to purchase sweetgrass baskets, locally made?

All the baskets in Charleston are locally made. Be prepared, because they are not inexpensive, nor should they be. They are very time consuming to make. You can buy them at The Market in historic Charleston, when walking around historic Charleston, you will see stands in various other areas where venders are making and selling them. In front of Town Centre Mall in Mt. Pleasant there are some stands with several vendors. If you drive out Hwy 17 north (in Mt. Pleasant going toward Myrtle Beach) you will see stands set up alongside the road. Do compare quality of the weaving at various places before making up your mind, not all weavers are at the same skill level. As a general rule, the baskets in the historic district will tend to be the most expensive and those in Mt. P somewhat less, since there is not as much foot traffic to see them.

For the larger, very nice baskets expect to pay over $100, some well over. I have a number of baskets and there are a couple that I paid in excess of $200 for. However, they are fantastic and I think they were worth it. If you don't abuse them, they will last forever. I often give them as wedding gifts to those who live out of state, along with a print out of their history.

I bought my last one at the Market when we were visiting in August. I found out, because I hesitated at the price listed-$250.00, that there could be some leeway in the prices marked. I offered a price, and then my husband asked if there would be a further discount if we paid cash. There was. I bought my basket for $175.00 and am very pleased with it.

Yes, the offer of cash can almost always bring the price down, at least a little.

Thanks. Didn't know if better prices were available at locations away from the market.

Mt Pleasant along Hwy 17 from The Mt. Pleasant Towne Center all the way up to Mt. Pleasant Hospital. Also, there is a Sweetgrass Pavilion in Mt. Pleasant at the new park under the bridge.

Also highly recommend Marilyn Dingle she sets up next to St. Michael's Church. She has had baskets in the Smithsonian!
