Holiday Parade of Boats

What is the native's suggestion for viewing this parade? Along the shore or on a tour boat? And for either, would it be best to drive and park or to get a taxi to and from? (Staying in Mt. Pleasant)

Either way is fun. The shore line (Waterfront Park, the Battery downtown) will be packed with people, arrive early (an hour or more) and get a spot. Same on the Mt. Pleasant side. Afterwards when everyone tries to leave at once, traffic becomes a nightmare. Taxi will be difficult for several reasons ~ 1) taxis do not drive around looking for fares here. You would have to call one in advance and wait on it to arrive... 10 minutes? 30?? 45?? There is no way to know when it will actually arrive. 2) would have to call again to leave and fighting aforementioned traffic could make for a very long wait for the taxi to arrive and/or a very high cab bill from sitting in traffic. All in all, the tour boat may be the best option, altho I have never done it that way.
