First time visit itinerary?

Thinking of spending two nights at Middleton Place to use as base for it, Magnolia, Tea Plantation, maybe Beaufort. Then moving to historic district for two nights and returning car. Does this make sense logistically? Thank you,

The itinerary seems a bit tight, unless you plan to arrive early and to "hit the ground running" on your first day, and to stay in Charleston late on your last day.

Seeing Middleton Place Plantation and Magnolia Plantation, possibly adding Drayton Hall (only surviving original plantation home, and just down the road from the others), will require a full day. Driving to Beaufort and touring the town will require a full day. Visiting the Tea Plantation (and stopping by the Angel Oak!) will require a half day. Historic Charleston requires a minimum of two days, though we would always encourage you to stay longer. :-)

I'd stay the entire time in the Historic District.

Get to Middleton when it opens, visit Drayton Hall and then go on to Angel Oak and the Tea Plantation.

Beaufort is wonderful, but with your short time, I'd skip it and save it for next time.

Spend the rest of the time walking and touring the Historic District.

Thanks. I'll postpone Beaufort for a future trip, maybe with Savannah/Golden Isles. What is approx. drive time from historic district to Middleton Place? Tea Plantation?

The Angel Oak is one of the most recognizable symbols of the lowcountry. A few years ago the oak appeared in Conde Naste Traveler's "Where are you?" segment at the end of the magazine. It's a great photo op, and is right on your way to the Tea Plantation - http://www.angeloaktree.org/

Depending on traffic, Middleton is about 30 minutes from the Historic District.

This sounds like an itinerary my friends and I would enjoy during our Charleston visit in May. However, Middleton and Drayton look to be in opposite directions from Angel Oak and Tea Plantation. Would we do the plantations first and then circle around towards John's Island? I assume this is doable in one day?

The Ashley River plantations (Middleton, Drayton, Magnolia) will make for a very full day, even if you visit only two of them. The Tea Plantation and the Angel Oak will take half of another day.

It's very doable in one day. Visit the plantations starting first thing in the morning, then head across Bee's Ferry Road to Main Road and out to Maybank, hang a right and you're on your way to Angel Oak and the Tea Plantation.

You could start at Drayton first, then do Middleton and have lunch right there.

Just an FYI, Firefly Distillery, maker of Sweet Tea Vodka, is also out on Wadmalaw Island.

It will be a long day, you might want to stop by one of the restaurants on Maybank Hwy on your way back into town...

Plan to have lunch at Middleton. If you're in a hurry, you can get a quick but good meal in the plant shed. If you have more time, the main restaurant on the grounds near the plantation house is a real treat.
