Look to the right side of this page (on a computer, not a phone) for Top Questions About Charleston. This will give you tons of ideas on what is available to see and do in the area. There are even sample itineraries. Once you have some ideas on what will interest you, you can ask more specific questions and we can help with that. :-)
Some things (plantations, carriage rides, Patriot's Point, etc) will not require any advance planning. However, if you want to experience some of the fantastic restaurants in the historic district..... you will need to make reservations at least 2 weeks in advance, 3 would be better. Read over some of the forum posts to see the places we suggest over and over again. (SNOB, Magnolia's, High Cotton, Peninsula Grill to name a few) Look up the menus and see what interests you and then plan ahead. These are the restaurants where we really eat, so during tourist season they are doubly busy ~ thus the need for reservations several weeks in advance. Heck, even I can't get in unless I do it that way. Where will you be staying in the Charleston area?
The Charleston Visitors Center website has up-to-date listings on things to do. If you're interested in any walking tours, do call in advance, as walking tours can take a limited number of people.
is there any public transport in Charleston and where does it go
looking at staying for a week or so and interested to see other places nearby but wont have a car
There is a bus system. http://www.ridecarta.com/
Bus system tends to be dismally slow and does not serve all areas. Taxis are an option, but can get expensive. You can rent a car for a single day to reach some of the outlying areas.
