Best time to visit?

I would like to plan a 3-day trip to Charleston and am fairly flexible on when. What is the best time to visit in terms of fewer crowds but still decent weather and better rates on hotels?

We would be driving down from Charlotte and would like to stay in the Historic District, but don't know if we can afford the rates!

We don't really have an "off season" any more after all the publicity of being named #1 tourist city 3 years in a row. Less crowded times are Oct thru March, with some notable exceptions. Exceptions being holidays (Tgiving and Christmas) and the Southeastern Wildlife Festival in Feb. I just had visitors from California during the last 4 days and was actually shocked at how crowded things were at this time. You should be able to get the best rates if there is any chance that you could visit Tues thru Fri ~ or some similar combination of weekdays. Weekends are always at a premium these days.
