Hotels in Charleston

My wife and I are planning on spending 3 days in June in the Charleston area. From reading some of the forums it appears that the Historic District is the recommended place to stay, however, the hotel rates there are outrageous. Since we will have a car, would somebody be able to recommend a hotel in a safe area within reasonable driving distance of the Historic District? Any suggestions on what we should include in our itinerary would also be appreciated. Thanks very much!

Please look to the right side of this page for Top Questions About Charleston ~ this will give you loads of info on what is available to see and do. There are even sample itineraries. Once you have some ideas on which things interest you, we can help you narrow them down and possibly add some suggestions.

Hotels listed as downtown, rather than historic district will be on the peninsula of Charleston. There are 2 Marriotts on Lockwood Blvd. Also just over the bridge in Mt. Pleasant would be fairly close, look for things listed as Patriot's Point area.

Hello Jack,

Hotels right across the bridge in Mt. Pleasant are much cheaper.

Consider Day's Inn in the Historic District at 155 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401. This is a generic hotel, but it has a great location, free parking right in front of your room, pool, and a good restaurant on the premesis. Call the hotel for the best price. 843 722-8411

Enjoy your visit!

Thank you for your suggestion. We are looking at booking the Holiday Inn Express in Mt Pleasant – has great reviews and is reasonably priced.

Our initial plan was to spend 3 nights but looks like will now be able to spend 4. We get in at 5pm on a Friday and leave Tuesday afternoon (assuming we spend the 4th night). As we have never been to Charleston we not familiar with the area. We would like to come away with a good understanding of the city and its attractions. We were thinking 1 day in the historic district; 1 day touring a couple of plantations; and maybe 1 day checking out one of the nice beaches. Any thoughts/ suggestions for itinerary would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

When are you coming? Spoleto Festival runs May 23 thru June 8 and fills all rooms and restaurants. As soon as it's over, rates go down.

If you're here June 28, the Carolina Day parade and celebration is unforgettable. Only an hour or so, they march from the corner of Broad & Meeting to White Point Garden. Google it.

Staying Mt Pleasant close in to Charleston is a good idea. You'll want more than a day in the historic district - several portions of several days will be good, mid-day in June is terribly hot. And you want less than a whole day on the beach, where it will be terribly hot. Sullivan's Island is nearest and most interesting.

I agree that one day in the historic district is just not enough, there is SO much there to see and do. I would either skip the beach or just go for a late afternoon/sunset walk on the beach after spending the earlier part of the day touring.

You could spend a morning either in the city and the afternoon at a plantation or vice versa. If you wish to see 2 plantations, that will take the better part of a day.

Thanks for the advice. We are coming June 6 - 10, so we will be there for the festival.

In that case, make reservations for hotel and restaurants as soon as is possible!! Spoleto bring thousands of visitors and without reservations made at least 3 weeks in advance, you may find that you can not get them at all.

If you want an interesting change of pace consider the Inn at Middleton Place. It is beautiful out there, about 30 minutes from downtown but admission for two people is included daily in the room rate.
