First Trip to Charleston

My 2 best friends and I are planning a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras in February of 2015, and planning to stop in Charleston for 2 or 3 nights on our way back to Jersey. We have never been to South Carolina and are very excited! We want to plan our trip wisely as we only have a limited time. What are the "must dos" in Charleston for a short visit?

We are also looking for great bar / restaurant suggestions. We just graduated college in the past 2 years and are looking for a younger crowd. We much prefer bars (especially dive bars) to clubs and live music is always a plus!

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

The most interesting and entertaining areas to stay in Charleston are the "historic district", at the southern end of the downtown peninsula, or (especially for young people) in the "design district", which is north and west of the HD. In these locations you will have food and entertainment right out your door, and you'll be able to walk most anywhere that you want to go. A little more information will help us make recommendations. Most important, what is your budget for accommodations in Charleston?

Please look to the right side of this page for Top Questions About Charleston.... it will give you some ideas on what are "must sees", etc, even has sample itineraries. A carriage ride around the historic district is a definite must do. Plan to make hotel reservations well in advance, as we are busy year round here. Also, plan restaurant reservations at least 2 weeks in advance.

Look up all the breweries in and around charleston. Westbrook, holy city, coast, frothy beard... my favorite is Holy City... it is a brewery and a bar. Super cool and laid back.

For a dive bar with live music try The Tin Roof in West Ashley, on Ashley River Road. They have a variety of types of music, nearly everyday of the week. Fiery Ron's BBQ Home Team is also right there on Ashley River Road and has live music Wednesday through Saturday, and sometimes other nights too - Wednesday they have a blues jam until midnight.
