What are the must see's or do's?

My husband and I are passing through Columbia for one day and night at the end of Decemeber. What is something we can do, or see during the day or night? We enjoy hiking, sightseeing, shopping, and in the evening we enjoy going out to fun venues with music, food, drinks, etc. Any help is appreciated.

I would recommend that you go downtown to the 'Vista' area for food, music and drinks. At night I would definitely recommend seeing the lights at the Riverbanks Zoo (5 minutes from the Vista). For shopping, if you're looking for more local stores, I would steer you towards 5 Points, which is also about a 5 minute drive from the Vista. These would be the most central points of the city, and very easy to navigate.

I would add that the State House (the capitol building) is a beautiful building to walk through for about 30 minutes or so. Literally one block away, the original "horseshoe" of the University of South Carolina is also an attractive walk, (and I say that despite the fact that I happen to be an alum of the rival institution of the university, Clemson).
