Beach on Sound versus Ocean

Considering a rental on Harbor Island because of the peacefulness and low traffic, but I'm wondering what difference it will make to front to the sound versus fronting to the Atlantic. Have stayed on many beaches in the area (Kiawah, Seabrook, Edisto, Topsail, Hilton Head) but all front to the ocean.

Anyone have insight to share about how this experience might be different?

Many thanks!

The ocean is calm on Harbor Island; no big waves and at low tide the water is out a good distance. Hunting Island State Park is just down the road if you want the option of having the Atlantic beach front. We usually do both beaches. We enjoy Harbor Island for the same reasons you stated. If you tire of the peace and quiet you can venture out to do some sightseeing and shopping on the other islands or Beaufort. Pick fresh produce and buy local shrimp in the area. Go to JC Tavern to eat.

If you're looking more for a traditional, wavy ocean, then you should probably consider Fripp Island, which is 5 more minutes down the road. Harbor has a sandy beach, but not much in the way of wave action. Still, it's an attractive place, but much smaller and far quieter than the other beaches you've mentioned.

Thanks so much for the feedback and advice. Will probably venture to Huntington for the day, but we don't do many water sports ... just enjoy walking along the beach, taking in the peace and calm of the ocean, and the beauty of it's surroundings. I think Harbor will be just our speed.

Do people bike on the beach/sand at Harbor?

We own a house at Harbor Island and visit there often. People do bike on the beach. We like it there as mentioned by another post: we alternate days between Harbor Island (which can have huge waves after a storm) with its sand dunes, horseshoe crabs and dolphins and Hunting Island, with its palm-tree coves, lighhouse and more serious surf! Be sure you check out the nature center, fishing pier, trails at Hunting Island... the pool, crabbing docks, sunsets and starry skies at Harbor Island.
