Similar to Hilton Head but closer to DC?

Could anyone recommend an area with a similar feel to Hilton Head closer to the Washington DC area? The drive to HH is a little much with 2 small ones. I like the vibe in Sea Pines with the close proximity of the restaurants. We’ve been to Myrtle, but that seems so built up and crowded.

Have you tried Cape May in New Jersey? Not quite HHI, but has a quaint seaport type of atmosphere and lovely homes. Great beach and shopping.

Cape May is quite nice... that's a great suggestion. Some of the beaches in Delaware (Bethany Beach) also can be quite serene. St. Michael's, MD (though not on the beach... on Chesapeake Bay) is a "harbour town", too.

If you still want to consider the Carolinas... the northern Outer Banks area and Elizabeth City, NC area may be of interest... further down you also have Ocean Isle and Bald Head Island in the vicinity of Wilmington, NC.

We stay in Cape May... which is very nice, family-oriented, Victorian sea-side resort. No chain restaurants or hotels, but many nice places to stay (including big selection of B&Bs) and lots of good places to eat for all tastes. There are many interesting and intriguing places to shop and the town is clean, well-kept and inviting. Not big on nightlife... i.e. only a handful of bars that are decent but nothing to write home about. Everything is within walking distance... much like KW. The beaches are nice, but they are not the wide flat beaches of HH... these beaches are the soft sands that are only cool and hard along the surf edge. It is the perfect place for a family to spend all day at the beach in the traditional "summer holiday" style. Cool breezes to manage the sun, wheeling sea-gulls, boardwalk food, umbrellas for napping, low-slung chairs for putting your toes in the water... It is quaint and nostalgic and we have been going every summer for over ten years. It's not HH, but certainly just as delightful and a little less expensive.

Try Virginia Beach. The town has done a very nice job over the years of making it more family oriented. The little inlet on the south end has several good restaurants right on the water. The Boardwalk is very nice, and every couple of blocks there is a park where you can find entertainment.
