Reco for Dolphin Boat Tour

We're looking for a dolphin boat cruise on a smaller boat for a family of 4, with 2 younger kids. I know that most tour companies guarantee that you see dolphins, but what company should we go with? Besides seeing dolphins, what else can we expect to do on the boat? How long in advance should we book the tour?

Captain Zodiac has been our favorite. You’ll travel in a small hard bottom boat which holds up to 6 passengers. The tours run around 1 and 1 1/2 hours.

It’s very informative and captain gears trip depending on your group.

We've seen so many dolphins, an amazing shell ring, marshes and all sorts of birds.

Last summer, we booked the last dolphin tour of the day which also included a beautiful sunset as well. The dolphins were more active during that time plus it was'nt so hot.

We’ve now taken this dolphin tour twice. Once with a little one (age 3) and teenagers (14 and 16). Everyone has really enjoyed themselves. Abby was our captain for both tours and fantastic!

Boat departs out of South Beach Marina by Salty Dog’s. I would book early especially for the last tour of the day.

Enjoy!

We use Outside Hilton Head in Shelter Cove for our dolphin tours, the boats hold up to 12 people, and you get up close and personal with the dolphins, you can check out their website if interested, shows times, availability etc. Since we are usually in HH in Oct or April we usually wait until we arrive to book depending on the weather. Our tour usually includes other bits of nature, history and we have been near shrimp boats to follow dolphins since the dolphins follow the shrimp.

Enjoy your tour no matter which boat you use

Thanks for all the answers! One more Q: we'll be at HHI end of July, should we book in advance or wait til we get there to check weather first?

We always visit the island late July/early August. You'll be fine as long as you book early in the week.

We wait until we arrive to book, that way we can check out the weather before booking. Outside Hilton Head's website has online reservations and you can see how many spots are available for each trip. Also, our last trip in April was during Easter/Spring Break week with more trips added to accomodate guests. Since you have young children be sure to check out Shannon Tanner's nightly show in Shelter Cove for kids it is so much fun. Another suggestion might be Schooner Welcome from Shelter Cove, it is a working schooner boat with an afternoon Pirate Sail just for kids, it is hands on with passengers helping with the sails and usually see dolphins along the way.

Enjoy

Another thumbs up for Cap't Z! We had a great time on that day. We booked just a couple of days earlier...just as well as storms were coming and going all week. We were there in early August. When we got off the boat, we went into the Wreck of the Salty Dog for some hush puppies to end the day on a sweet note!

I called Captain Zodiac tours today for a friend who also happens to be visiting in July. I was told…Since it’s now summer, everything tends to book rather quickly especially at the height of the season. If there is a certain date and time you have in mind, go ahead and reserve now. This way you get the time slot you would like to have. (Especially tours which are the most popular) Otherwise wait until you get to HHI.

Nothing is charged to your credit card until you actually take the tour. There is a 24 hour cancellation policy. If there is a weather issue they will try and reschedule for some time during your stay. If that is not possible your money will be refunded. Hope this helps!

That's fantastic! Thanks for the great info. Will book early in the week before we arrive, just in case.

Does Captain Zodiac have multiple boats or just one?

You'll probably have to contact them for that information. I'm not quite sure how many boats they have off hand. I don't remember very many maybe one or two at best.
