visitor biking in Sea Pines

We're staying in PD next week and renting bikes. I was wondering about biking down to Sea Pines and through the gate into the plantation. Are there any prohibitions? Will we need to pay at the gate like visiting vehicles?

If you aren't staying in Sea Pines, I'm betting they'll charge you at the gate for entry. Those that have biked out earlier in the day were given a passcode that changes daily for re-entry, so if you were to come up to the gate w/o that they'd probably question you.

That being said, there is no gate on the beach. If you were to happen to bike on the beach into Sea Pines territory, a good place to get inland to the bike paths is Sea Pines Beach Club. It's about 2 miles down the beach from Coligny.

There is definitely a gate with a code on the bike path at the Ocean Gate into Sea Pines. We have to enter the code everytime we return to Sea Pines from a bike ride to Coligny for lunch.

I do not believe - unless the policy has recently changed- that the gate will let bikers in without either the pink gate pass (which is different from the daily $5 pass) or the code. They cannot pay the $5 as cars do and get admitted. The beach access into Sea Pines is possible as there is rarely any official checking entering bikers.

Thanks to all for the replies. Plenty of public trails to keep us occupied.

There is an uneven access policy at the different plantations, which I think is unfortunate. We wanted to ride into Hilton Head Plantation and were turned away. It is one of the biggest areas on the island. We found a way to ride in using beach access. It was way more difficult that Sea Pines. I want to have clear access information for bikers. It is not available in one place. Cycling is one of HHI's most unique characteristics. With bicycling growing around the country HHI is poised to become a draw with it's continued support for trails and bicycling infrastructure.

Norm- with regard to uneven access policies- plantations are private communities, not owned by the town of Hilton Head. Many plantations have few, if any, tourist attractions and are primarily residential. Hilton Head Plantation, for instance, does have a public restaurant, Old Fort Pub, and some public golf courses, but other than that, they are private homes. Sea Pines has numerous tourist attractions which is why they allow entrance with a fee (although frown on bikers coming in who are not guests or residents in the plantation). The home owners are the ones who pay plantation fees yearly, a portion of which is spent on upkeep of bike paths, landscaping, etc. Given that, the homeowners associations and plantation boards determine guest policies. Hope this helps to explain the difference in policies.

My wife and I are heading down to HH this Thursday for a long weekend and are staying out side of Sea Pines Plantation. Looks like we can't enter Sea Pines by bicycle, but can we drive in with our bikes on the rack, pay the $5 entry fee, then park and bike from there?
