Charleston and beach combo vacation

This will be our family's first trip to Charleston. We have 2 daughters ages 9 and 7. We would like to spend 2 nights in Charleston visiting historic sights and experiencing great restaurants. Then we would like to spend 3 nights at a beach front resort...IOP, Kiawah, etc...any suggestions on:

Hotels in Charleston (close to the action)

Resorts near the beach

Historic attractions must see list

Kid Friendly restaurants

Thank you!!!

Check out Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms for the beach portion of your visit.

When are you coming, and what budget range for hotels?

Charleston Visitors Center website is a great place to start for some ideas of things to do: http://www.charlestoncvb.com/visitors/.

The Isle of Palms has the gated Wild Dunes Resort and 2 other hotels in a different location on the island. Sullivan's Island has no hotels and Folly Beach has 1 hotel. Each of these is about 20 min from the downtown historic district. Kiawah Island has only one very expensive hotel and Seabrook Island has no hotels. Since you are only staying a few nights, you will most likely be limited to staying in a hotel. Condos typically rent for a week at a time, except in the off seasons.

Any hotel listed as "historic district" (not downtown) will be walking distance to the attractions.

I agree that Wild Dunes Resot is a good fit. While you are on Isle or Palms you will enjoy visiting Fort Moultrie on adjacent Sullivans Island.

If you are visiting in summer, you will be limited to hotels since most vacation rental homes and condos required a one week stay.

Also, try to avoid August 6 - 12, when the 94th PGA Championship on Kiawah will cause a huge influx of visitors throughout the area.

At that time of year, you may be able to rent a condo at Wild dunes for those nights.
