Best time to visit the barrier islands?

Visiting SC for the first time, just my wife and I. Thought we would spend a few nights in Charlestown and a few on one of the beaches. We want to be able to get in the water but other than that we can go at any time of the year. I've been reading some posts about palmetto bugs and jelly fish, are they a a problem during particular months? Thanks for your help.

PS:

Do all of the beaches have the hard packed sand?

Palmetto bugs aka roaches are always with us. If roaches and jellyfish were serious issues, South Carolina would not be world-famous for our beaches. Not all beaches have hard-packed sand, Myrtle Beach is fabled for its cozy loose sand. None of our beaches are rocky.

Jellyfish are seasonal, they choose the season. Usually it's "jellyballs" with a sting that's anywhere from annoying to dangerous (if you're particularly allergic).

If you want to get in the water, May thru September would be the best months to visit. Water will be a bit cooler in May and still quite warm in September. As mentioned, there are sometimes jellyfish and there is not a particular "season" for them. The Palmetto bugs live here year round. They are not a problem in any well maintained place. You may see one from time to time, consider them a transient immigrant to the indoors. In the evenings during warm weather, when outside, you may see them running about the sidewalk, etc. Just ignore them.

Rates will be a bit better before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Between those times is the peak season. Beaches will have dry fluffy sand farther away from the water, adjacent to the dunes. The areas that have been wet during the high tide will remain hard packed when dry.

Thank you both for your responses. We are looking forward to our visit. Have heard nothing but raves about Charleston from the friends who have been there.
