OK, going to the beach for the first time in 20 years.......

I have only been to the beach once and it was 20 years ago. I have never really wanted to go to the beach being more of a mountain person we go to Gatlinburg every year for vacation but this year my family wants to go to the beach.

Where can we avoid large crowds, eat really good food, do fun things, and stay away from the drunken college kids?

Hi Jackson,

Are you looking solely in the Myrtle Beach / Grand Strand area, or are you willing to look further down to South Carolina Coast?

If you wish to stay in the Myrtle Beach area, the Pawley's Island / Litchfield Beach / Murrell's Inlet area is rather nice. If you want to go further down the coast, Edisto Island and Beaufort / Hunting Island / Fripp Island are good choices, too.

Agree with beaufort-tiger - if you're looking for quieter (and all the other things)...Litchfield, Pawley's, Isle of Palms, Kiawah, Seabrook and Fripp/Beaufort are better choices.

North Myrtle Beach, Surfside are Garden City are geared towards families, not college kids. Very close to all MB attractions. Peak periods are late June through July, so crowds will be less before or after that period.

You also might try Oak Island, NC just across the NC border. Very quiet, family oriented beach which we find to be a bit less expensive than some of the others. Check out rentalsatthebeach.com for rental homes and condos. We have been there 6-8 times over the years and love it!

After many trips we settled in the Surfside area and bought a condo there in 1998. Have been back 5-6 times a year since then and have never been disappointed. Convenient access to all major attractions, restaurants, etc and very family oriented.

I love Surfside area too. Lots of restaurants, less crowded, less traffic but still within a few minutes drive to MB>

I also recommend the Surfside/Garden City area of the Grand Strand. More family oriented but close enough to all the action of Myrtle Beach to venture there at night or on a rainy day. You may have to rent a condo or house in this area, there are few hotels, hence the less crowded beaches.
