What happens after a hurricane passes through??

We are considering a trip to MB on Sunday. As of now it looks like Earl should miss South Carolina, but of course there's no guarantee.

Before I book the airfare, I was hoping to get some local expertise on what happens after a hurricane passes by. I'm guessing the ocean is rougher than usual, but does bad weather (rain, etc) tend to follow as well?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone! :)

As of this morning, the 15 day forecast looks great.

Every circumstance is different. Depends of the strength of the hurricane, how close it came, how quickly (or slowly) it passes by. It can mean rain, rough seas, clouds, wind or perhaps none of those.

We have been evacuated twice while in MB. In both cases we were allowed back on the 2nd day. There was little damage and most eveything was opened again by the 3rd day. In both instances by the time we drove back from Columbia the weather was beautiful and sunny. Could have been a more slow moving storm though and the rain would have lasted for days. There's just no telling. The biggest pain could be dealing with your airline if you have to change your return schedule.

In most cases, the weather is beautiful just after a hurricane passes. There are a couple of reasons for this. One has to do with the storm sucking up all the moisture nearby and carrying it along. The other has to do with rotation. Because hurricanes rotate counter-clockwise, the north-west edge packs the most punch when it nears shore. To the south of the eye, the winds are coming from the land side where they don't have the heat and moisture from the sea to fuel them. So the bad weather on the south side tends to clear up quickly as it moves along.

Of course, every storm is different!
