Myrtle Beach Octoberfest will be going....(But they moved it to Maket Commons, which is not good IMO)

Places to stay...Check out Anderson Beach Club...Nice place for couples, lots of bars and restaurants, Pier 14, Boardwalk, that you can walk to...Broadway at the Beach is a cheap cab ride away.

Also look into the Breakers, Camelot (closer to Pier and Boardwalk) and the Carribean, (nice stretch of beach, quieter, but a little further away from the bars and restaurants)

Anderson is always recommended for couples. Good place. But check out Island Vista as well. Very nice, great location as far as being quiet, and not crowded at all. (which, really, most places will be that time of year) Can't walk to anything from Island Vista, but it is a lovely hotel in a lovely location. A very easy drive to everything..plus a great restaurant on site! Also..why not check out the Marriott Resort and Spa at Grande Dunes..since you mentioned Marriott. Nice!!

If you want something a little more upscale definitely check Anderson first. Not overly familiar with Island Vista but hear great things about it as well.

I'm seeing a lot of island vista so I'm guessing that the cab ride isn't that bad to the board walk

This conversation has been kicked around a hundred times on here. If you're flying in and not going to have a car you will miss most of the attractions and better restaurants.

The price of a few cab rides would cover the cost of a low budget car rental for a few days. Plus the convenience of coming and going at your own pace vs calling and waiting for a cab every outing.

Myrtle Beach is really the "Grand Strand". A group of beach communities stretched out along the coast for 50 miles. So much to see and do besides the boardwalk.
