my husband and I are going to be in MB from Sept 4th to Sept 10. What is there to do that don't cost a lot of money. I'd like to be a non tourist for a week and see what life in MB is like.
From my experience there are several types of locals. Some work three jobs because of the low salaries. They go to the beach occasionally, go to Little League Games, Church, eat out ocassionally, etc. There are retired folks. They tend do some of the above, but tend to go out during the week for happy hours, go to the beach more, play golf, etc.
I don't live here but am down almost every month as some of my family does. We cook out on the grill at home, go to the pool, go to the beach. Sometimes do a little shopping. Go out and watch football on Sunday afternoon. Maybe a happy hour or out to eat. Not much different than I would do at home except for the beach part. Even locals go to tourist places. We don't go to Barefoot or Broadway a lot, and definitely avoid it in season, but we do go.
Where are you staying? If you want to live like a local, don't stay ocean front or even 2nd or 3rd row back. (I know some locals do, but...) Grab the local newspaper...Sun News I think is the name. Read thru it and look for community activities. Church festivals or carnivals. Maybe even go to a church service. Music festivals in little parks. Go to the library. Go to a local high school or middle school football or soccer game.
Lots of things to do for free: Go to Broadway at the Beach, Barefoot Landing, Market Common or Tanger Mall. Doesn't cost a thing to park and walk around.
Edited: 7 years agoI think a lot of locals still visit Murrell's Inlet and partake of the great seafood restaurants there and many have outdoor music/bands. Also , there is another forum for Myrtle Beach ,at funbeaches, there are some locals on the board there. There is a farmer's market at Market Common, I believe on sundays.
Prosser's is often full of locals during lunch hour. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g54358-d436292-Reviews-Prosser_s_Bar_B_Que-Murrells_Inlet_South_Carolina.html
The biggest thing we do is just hang out at the beach, mainly Huntingdon Beach State Park. We have an annual pass for SC State Parks so it's cost effective for our family of 4 to go there. But obviously there are plenty of beach access points all across the Grand Strand. You do have to pay for parking in the city of Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach. I think both towns take the meters down Sept 15. But parking is always free in Garden City and I think North Myrtle Beach (don't quote me on that).
We also have an annual pass for Brookgreen Gardens so we spend lots of time there.
Obviously if you coming for just a week, then getting annual passes is not cost effective and admittance to both can be pricey.
Before kids, we also used to kayak a ton. We have a tandem kayak but you can rent them relatively cheap. My favorite place to put in is in Conway at the Riverfront park. There used to be an outfitter there but I just tried to look it up and can't find it. You can also go with Black River Outdoors and go in the Murrells Inlet area (near Huntingdon Beach State Park).
But basically, I stay the hell out of Myrtle Beach, except when I'm working! LOL! We live in Murrells Inlet so we hang out on the south end mostly. There are tons of things to do in the area that don't cost much. I feel like the entire town of Myrtle Beach is a huge tourist trap so that why we typically avoid it.
Drive down to Caledonia Golf Course for a lunch on the outside veranda. You won't be disappointed.
You are a tourist
