Where do the locals go to eat & drink?

I'm familiar with the restaurants at Murrells Inlet, but does anyone have any other suggestions where local folks go for great, but unpretentious food? I'm not interested in the touristy places. Atmosphere doesn't mean much, either, although it would be great to find a great spot on the water. Any suggestions? How about a good happy hour somewhere? I'll be staying at Cherry Grove the second week in Aug.

Try Captain Poo's Blue Marlin grill. Definitely a locals place. Great Happy Hour prices, and good food. Located on the waterfront:

Thanks so much for the suggestion. From it's menu U website, Capt. Poo's is exactly what I'm looking for!

Poos is very much a "bar", you go there mainly to drink and it is smoky inside, you can sit outside but it is low on my list for food choices. If you like Murrells Inlet, then go to Calabash, NC for seafood. Little River waterfront has Capt Juels and Crab Catchers for some decent seafood. Duffy's Seafood shak is popular restaurant/bar on Sea Mtn Hwy or Main St, not the cheapest meal in town and not necessarily the best IMO, but people we recommend go there seem to all like it.

In Cherry Grove, may want to give Harold's a try. It's directly on the beach...has indoor and outdoor seating, and live music from time to time. Food is definitely 'unpretentious'. It's where Sea Mountain Hwy and Ocean Blvd meet....big blue awning.

I absolutely disagree with Hart1. However, she is a local, and that's what you asked about.

I only make recommendations on places that I've actually been in. We've been to Captain Poo's twice, and have really enjoyed the food, music, service, and atmosphere. We're not bikers, and we've taken our children there. We felt like it was a great atmosphere, and based on your description above, it certainly seems like it would fit what you want.

It is smokey inside, but there are plenty of places to eat outside... including tables along the waterfront. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

Check it out, and it if it isn't what you want, it's not far from some of the other places that were suggested. At most, it will take 5 minutes of your life to see if this is what you are looking for.

That's cool WV, not saying your are wrong, just giving another side to it. My husband used to eat lunch at poos often during work week. But no more. Different atmosphere now, don't know why, but the last time we were there I said never again. Poo's is very much a local bar type atmosphere, not sure I would take my grandchildren there, maybe eating outside ok, but IMO the service has always been poor and I am a stickler about service.

I"ll give Capt Poo's a try. If it's too smokey, I'll leave. Thanks for sharing.

I'd also like to hear what hart1's favorites are, too! Always good to get info from a local.

My personal favorites are:

1) Duffy Street Seafood Shack

2) Crab Catcher's

3) Captain Poo's: http://captpoos.com/default.aspx

4) Deckerz: http://www.deckerznmb.com/

5) Snooky's: http://www.snookysonthewater.com/

Of course, we also like Ocean Annies (though it technically isn't in North Myrtle): http://www.oceanannies.com/

We like Ellas in Calabash, Sea Merchants in Crescent Beach section. I like Captain Juels and Crab Catchers at Little River Waterfront.
