Best Route from Salisbury, NC

We're headed back to Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort this weekend and last year's US-501 / SC-544 circus is still burned into our brains - it was horrible creeping along mile after mile, and frequently being at a complete standstill. There's got to be a better way! We're fine with driving further in order to avoid that sort of ridiculous situation.

Suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I would try approaching the area from Georgetown. Head south from the Florence, SC area - through Lake City and then into Georgetown on 512/51. Take 17 North from there. Much less traffic that way.

Headed down for the Pavilion Reunion? Just a wild guess..... :-)

We make frequent trips to Winston-Salem to visit the kids, so I feel your pain. Anytime we are forced to make the trip on a busy weekend, we use the following route. If traffic were no issue, we figure it would add about 10-15 minutes to our travel time. On a busy day, it's anybody's guess how much time it saves. It's easier to follow along if you have a map handy. If you use a GPS, set it for Johnsonville, SC, and then from there to Pawleys Island.

We stay on 501 Bypass around Marion. The traffic will have picked up but rarely backed up. Just as the 501 Bypass merges back into 501 on the South side of Marion, we get off on Hwy 41, toward Johnsonville. Hwy 41 will merge with Hwy 51 and pass thru Johnsonville and Hemingway. About 11 miles after Hemingway, follow the left fork onto Hwy 51. There is a large Exxon station in this fork. Hwy 51 will lead you to Hwy 701/Fraser Street in Georgetown. A right on Fraser Street will lead you to Hwy 17. Follow that north to Pawleys.

A couple notes - These are good, well-traveled two-lane back roads, but I don't recommend doing it the first time at night. It wouldn't be a fun trip if you don't know the roads. If you take it, there is a bridge out on Hwy 41, but no worries. It is a brief, well-marked detour. IMO, it's still a far better choice than the 501 nightmare thru Aynor and Conway.

Hope y'all enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for both sets of suggestions - might try them both (going and returning)! Tomorrow I'll take a shot at programming them into the BMW Z4 and see what it does with them. That navigation system has a mind of its own and comes up with the strangest routes sometimes. And trying to set "waypoints" to create a custom route (instead of using where it thinks you should go) is a major pain. The navigation systems in our Cadillacs have always been much friendlier.

As far as the Pavilion Reunion, that's just a potentially fortuitous coincidence. We're thinking about it. Our beach music history is grounded in OD (now included in the insipidly named "North Myrtle Beach") at Fat Harold's various incarnations. But we love the music regardless of where it's performed!

Thanks again.

P.S.

Just realized our initial post was misleading about the length of our stay. We'll be there for 8 days, not just the weekend.

Looking forward to doing Perrone's, Bistro 217 (a perennial favorite), Chive Blossom, PIT (love, love the crab cakes), Island Bar & Grill (great for drinks and snacks after a hard morning of shopping for the wife at Taylor's and Palm Shoes & Collections), and we might visit Frank's - been a while since we were last there. Breakfast is always great at Webster's at Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. No doubt we'll discover some new places too.

Well, we unintentionally more or less tried the Lake City route on the way down to Pawleys Island, but we didn’t do it properly. Did I mention in an earlier post that our BMW Z4 navigation system has a mind of its own?! We were actually trying to do the Johnsonville / Hemingway route but that d**n nav system kept trying to pull us back onto 52 the whole way. Consequently we missed picking up SC 38 at Bennetsville and ended up in Florence.

For the return trip we were determined to it right and even went so far as to do the unthinkable – bought a hardcopy SC roadmap! And we did get it right. From Pawleys Island the 17 to Georgetown, 701/51/41 to Johnsonville, 41/41alt/501bypass/38 to Bennetsville, 9 to Cheraw, and 52 to Salisbury route provided great roads and no consequential traffic – also lots of pretty countryside. Did the return trip in exactly 4 hours. Will definitely be using those roads in the future. Thanks for the recommendation.
