Best time for Summer Visit

We are planning a summer visit to Deadwood, and are flexible on schedule. What is considered the high/busy season? When are the rates most reasonable? Thank you!

Personally, I'd go in August AFTER Sturgis. Anytime after the 15th would be good, and then you can finish up before Labor Day. Some kids are back in school then, so crowds are a little lighter. Some hotels even drop rates after mid August. Cheaper yet would be September after Labor Day.

I'm not sure on any Deadwood events that might be occurring, so you might want to maybe check with the Chamber of Commerce to avoid any crowded times. BlackHillsGuide would probably know any special events happening. Hopefully, he will reply. He's a great source of info and lives locally.

Also watch out around June 18-19 this year for Wild Bill Days in Deadwood. Fills the place up and hotel rates are higher. We stayed there once just before and watched them setting up the stages and venues and it looked like it would have been fun to stay for it but we had to get home.

If you are looking to avoid crowds and get better rates at the hotels then early June and late September will be the best time to visit. by scheduling this way you will find that most of the attractions are still open but most of the crowds are gone. You should remember, however, that crowds in this area really don't get all that large except during the Sturgis Rally which is scheduled for August 8 through August 14 this year. You will rarely run into long wait times, traffic problems or long lines as long as you avaid that time frame.

Another excellent way to save money on your Deadwood hotel stay is to stay in Lead and use the shuttles or taxi to Deadwood. The two towns are in close proximity and the rates are considerably less that way. I recommend the Golden Hills Resort which runs an inexpensive limousine service for the 5 minute ride to Deadwood.

If you want to come n September and like music I suggest that you visit during the Deadwood Jam which is scheduled for September 17th and 18th this year. The Jam is a great venue for blues rock and country western music. Collective Soul will headline this years 2 day event.
