Family Gathering in Lead

We're a group of 5 families totally 18 people staying just outside Lead for 5 days at the end of this month. Most of the kids are teenagers. Most are active, and a grandma who is not. We'll be cooking some meals in and going out for some. Please suggest restaurants that can accommodate a group our size, places for groceries, things we should be sure not to miss while we're in the area. Are the selection and prices at the local grocery store similar to what we'd find if we ventured out a bit further? For restaurants, fresh and local preferred over chain restaurants.

The grocery shopping in Lead is pretty limited. They couldn't even keep a grocery store in Deadwood, just down the road.

I would suggest the Wal-Mart in Spearfish. It's a super Wal-Mart and is stocked as well as the ones here in Rapid City.

If you have anything against Wal-Mart, then Lynn's should be a pretty good bet.

The Walmart in Spearfish would be the best option for groceries.

As far as as things not to miss while in the area, I would recommend the following:

Mt Rushmore

Custer State Park

Devil's Tower

Spearfish Canyon

Crazy Horse

Wind Cave

Jewel Cave

Badlands National Park

There's plenty of other things to see and do, and you can review the many attractions of the area by looking at travelsd.com. There's a great travel planner you can order.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Most of the restaurants in Deadwood would be able to accommodate a group your size. You will not find many chain restaurants in the Black Hills other than Rapid City and maybe a few in Spearfish. We especially like the Deadwood Grille located in The Lodge at Deadwood. The Deadwood Social Club is also good. For a more casual lunch Kevin Costner's sports bar, the Midnight Star, has decent sandwich fare and your group might enjoy looking at all the prop's and costumes from his movies. Although I am not sure this little restaurant could handle a group your size all at once, I highly recommend the Cheyenne Crossing cafe located at the south entrance into Spearfish Canyon. Don't let the facade deter you. It is the old Deadwood Stagecoach depot and has some of the best food in the area. Wonderful breakfasts, lunches and dinners, fantastic desserts, friendly service and very reasonable prices A local favorite, this little cafe has won several awards for it's food. We especially like the Indian Taco and their carrot cake is the best we have ever tasted. If they are not able to accommodate you inside, there is outdoor seating providing the weather is good. The Latchstring Inn in Spearfish Canyon is another dining possibility.

The teen's in your group will find plenty to do in the Lead/Deadwood area. Spearfish Canyon has some wonderful hiking trails and good fishing. The Mickelson Trail is a wonderful bike or hiking trail and you can rent bicycles. You can also rent UTVs or ATVs from Black Hills Off-Road Rentals 10 miles south of Deadwood on Hwy. 385. Deadwood Gulches of Fun has go carts and other fun activities. Those interested in the history of the area will enjoy Deadwood's several museums, shoot-outs, etc. The Broken Boot Goldmine in Deadwood has a tour that is fun, and the mining museum in Lead might be of interest. Anyone in your group interested in a horseback trail ride? I highly recommend Andy's Trail Rides just outside of Lead. Andy's web site is http://www.andystrailrides.com. Not your typical tail to tail ride and the scenery is fantastic.

Srltravelplanner has given you the must sees for the central and southern Black Hills. Recommended restaurants in these areas would be any of the lodges in Custer State Park, especially State Game Lodge, Sylvan Lake Lodge and Blue Bell Lodge. The best place to eat in Keystone is The Powder House Lodge, 1 mile north on Hwy. 16 or Big Time Pizza in town gets great reviews on TA. Hill City has The Alpine Inn which only serves filet mignon for dinner at a very reasonable price and wonderful sandwiches and German food for lunch. Desserts are fantastic. If you plan to eat there you will definitely need reservations, if they take them (I'm not sure), and expect to wait. Also, they do not except credit cards but do have an ATM.
