family visit to Mt. Rushmore during Sturgis??

We are planning a trip to Mt. Rushmore this summer with my family (my wife and I, our two kids (2&5) and my parents.

The week that works the best is August 2-6, which I understand coincides with the Sturgis Harley rally.

Will it be impossible to find hotel rooms, places to eat, etc., or is Sturgis far enough away?

Should we postpone until October?

I have never been to the area during Sturgis, as I am not a lover of crowds or high lodging rates. If you are able to find a hotel, you will probably have to pay top dollar, unless you wind up lodging in the southern region of the Black Hills (i.e. Hot Springs...I have read on here that this area is far enough away to not be as affected.) The downside--Hot Springs is about 50 miles from Keystone, home of Mt. Rushmore.

Personally, if it were me, I'd reschedule my trip. You would probably be better off coming in early October.

You may also run into accommodations that require a full week's reservation, full payment far in advance and harsh cancellation penalties.

You know your tolerance for motorcycle noise and crowds. If it were me, I'd avoid that week.

The advantage of October will be lower rates and smaller crowds. You can information on the weather at www.wunderground.com

I'd also avoid it then. Last time we went we came in on the tail end of it and it wasn't too bad-lots of bikes on the road, some in Custer SP, and some at the hotel, although everyone we encountered was very nice and friendly. However, the 2nd through the 6th you'll be hitting the bulk of the crowds because they don't just stay in Sturgis, they like to sight-see too! By Saturday/Sunday it seems like the majority are heading home.

So, if you can't push it up a week or push it back a week you probably would be better off in October.
