travel from Minneaplois MN to Rapid City SD

We will be driving from MN to Rapid City SD to visit Black Hills. What would be a good place to stay overnight close to Rapid city.

It doesn't have to be in Rapid City, can be surrounding areas.

Thanks

are you looking for a place to stop before exploring the Black Hills? or a base from which to explore the Black Hills?

If it's a night's stop-- We liked Chamberlain. Left us with a 2 hour drive the following morning to the east entrance of the Badlands. Gave us the day to drive thru the Badlands and tour the Minuteman Missile site before heading that night to Keystone.

Keystone is a good spot to stay to explore the area of Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State park, etc--

Chamberlain is a good stopping point on the way in.

The best base towns for a Black Hills vacation are Keystone, Hill City or Custer. They are the most centrally located for touring. Rapid City is not really as ideal a base as the other 3 towns, as it's not as centrally located and has a much more urban vibe. Despite that Rapid is not a large city, I believe you are still better off in a smaller town setting for a more relaxing vacation.

Go online or order a Black Hills travel guide with lots of info on sample trip plans, lodging, restaurant, activities, and coupons, etc.-

If we are not going to do any gambling we usually stay in Custer because it is more central and a bit less crowded than Keystone or Hill City. Rushmore is still an easy drive from there and points south are easier to get to/from (Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Custer SP, Hot Springs, etc...).

On other hand if on way back to Seattle then Deadwood is hard to beat for easier access to I-90 and option for scenic Spearfish Canyon on way back to freeway. If sort of off-season the hotels in Deadwood can have some deals running to draw people there.

We also drove from Minneapolis to Rapid City the other day and chose to stay in Mitchell, SD. LaQuinta is a beautiful hotel with a very clean and nice breakfast area. We hated leaving.

On the way out we passed by the Corn Palace but that took 5 minutes. Nothing of interest inside - just an ordinary building.

Have a fabulous trip. We are enjoying every moment of ours.
