One day/one night in Chatt..suggestions, please!

Will drive up from ATL for an overnight stay with a friend visiting from South AMerica. Thinking of the following:

Aquarium (or maybe not, could just do ATL's)

Rock CIty

SOmething else? What?

Where to stay? Limited funds. WOuld like to stay under $125--just need a place to plop our heads at night,

Thanks.

Near Rock City, we liked the Incline RR, the Civil War narrated map, the beautiful park.

You can probably get below $125 downtown, but if not you can stay just down the road at the Lookout Valley exit.

I would skip Atlanta's aquarium and just visit the one here. Some people like the other one more, but the majority enjoy Chattanooga's much better. More attention for detail, better visitor experience.

Rock City's steep but a good classic attraction. If you want to visit a cave I'd go to Raccoon Mountain. On Lookout Mountain besides Rock City I recommend visiting Glen Falls and the Chattanooga Arboretum. The Arboretum is just gorgeous. You can pack a lunch with stuff from Enzo's Market on the Southside and have a great afternoon. The Hunter Museum is a great establishment as well. You can check out the Art District while you're up there. Don't miss walking across the river on the Walnut Street Bridge and walking up and down Frazier Avenue on the other side.

I didn't mention Ruby Falls because we didn't think it was worth the time or money.

Agree with all of bluecuzco suggestions as well as andees to blow off Ruby Falls and spend some time in the arts district- check staybridge suites downtown and springhill suites on the river - they might be in your price range

I would see if you should get a "deal" at the Sheraton Read House or Staybridge Suites downtown. Sometimes the travel websites run a special. There is also a Holiday Inn Express about 7 blocks from the center of town. There is comp shuttle that runs around the downtown area and across the bridge from the Southside (town) to the Northside. You can also walk across the Walnut Street Bridge Pedestrian Bridge from downtown to the Northside. You would enjoy a visit to Coolidge Park, walk along the Tennessee River waterfront and admire the beautiful antique Carousel. The Bluff View Arts District is also well worth a visit.

The springhill suites in downtown honors a 99.00 rate when you pick up a brochure at the Welcome center in east ridge. Just call ahead to make sure they have the availability, then pick up the brochure, and walk into the hotel

Is the lookout valley exit in walking distance to downtown?
