Nashville or Franklin?

I will be in the Nashville area the last week of May. I definitely want to see all the music sites in Nashville, but I'm also interested in dining, shopping, history, etc. My question is, would I be better off staying in downtown Nashville, or should I stay in downtown Franklin and just drive into Nashville for the Ryman, Opry, Hall of Fame, etc? Are most things cheaper in Franklin? I'd also like the hotel to be within walking distance of shops, dining, etc.

It depends on the experience you want from your visit. A bed & breakfast in Franklin would put you in a historic town underlain by the events of the latter part of the Civil War. Engrossing stories float around certain houses and estates about which you should read before visiting ie: field hospitals located in nice homes where hundreds of limbs were amputated, Confederate Generals' bodies stacked like cord wood on a single porch, the last massive "naked charges" of troops in the war into the teeth of grape shot and musket balls, and a singular "Widow" who knew and cared for hundreds of mortally wounded soldiers in and around her home, and then spent the rest of her life dressed in black mourning dress tending the graveyard of fallen troops which she provided on her property.

Downtown Franklin is well preserved or restored and contains many shops, boutiques, restaurants and some comfortable and unique bars in which to connect with friendly locals.

The drive in to Downtown Nashville is 20 minutes or so if not during rush hour.

Franklin is a great town to visit. There's a nice Hilton Garden Inn at Cool Springs Mall just off I 65. Go to Puckett's for good food and fun music.

Hilton Garden Inn @ 9150 Carothers Parkway, Franklin, TN 615 - 656 - 2700.

Puckett's Grocery & Restaurant @ 120 4th Avenue S., Franklin, TN. 615 - 794 - 5527.

Go to Franklin and see Carnton. Have lunch at Puckett's. If you are interested in Civil War history, take the Carter House tour. While not a plantation, it was in the center of the Battle of Franklin and a good tour.

Carnton Plantation @ 1345 Carnton Lane, Franklin, TN 615 - 794 - 0903,

Carter House @ 1140 Columbia Avenue, Franklin, TN 615 - 791 - 1861.
