What to see in Knoxville?

My boyfriend and I are going to spend an afternoon in Knoxville during Thanksgiving weekend and are trying to figure out what to do. I would love to hear any suggestions!

We're particularly looking for somewhere to possibly catch some bluegrass, a few sights off the beaten path and a good place to get a bite (no chain restaurants!).

Thanks!

The areas surrounding Knoxville are pretty, but inside of Knoxville itself there's not a ton to see or do (especially if you're coming from a city like Baltimore). Head to Market Square in the middle of downtown. There should be something going on there for the weekend and the shops and galleries should be open to browse through. Some pubs and a variety of non-chain restaurants are all situated in that area too. In the evening you could catch some music, although not sure it will be bluegrass. Depends on who is playing where that night. www.knoxvillemarketsquare.com/index.html

Another very popular local restaurant is Calhoun's on the River. Barbeque is their specialty. It's close to downtown; however if it's a UT game day you're better off avoiding that area (Volunteer Landing) in general. It'll be a packed sea of orange. On the other hand, if you don't mind the crowds and loads of orange, strolling down Cumberland Avenue (The Strip) near UT before a game can be an interesting experience in and of itself.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Do you have any suggestions for stuff to do around Knoxville? Last year we stayed right by the Smokey Mountains National Park. Our main options for going out were in Pigeon Forge and Gaitlinburg, which were fine . . . We were just hoping that we could find a little something different to do in the vicinity and that Knoxville would be the best option.

Any other suggestions that you might have are more than welcome!

Have you considered nearby Maryville? It is only 20 miles from Knoxville and offers more of a small town atmosphere. Haven't been personally but do know that it gets good reviews. Plenty of shopping, parks, historical places and still not far from the Smokies on the Townsend side....which is another great little town. No congestion like that of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

You might want to check the schedule for the Tennessee Theatre downtown and see what's going on there. It's a beautifully restored movie palace from the late 1920's and they don't build them like this one anymore.http://www.tennesseetheatre.com/

Other locations you may find interesting are Ramsey House, Marble Springs, Blount Mansion, Sam Houston School House, Crescent Bend and the World's Fair Sunsphere.

For a really good steak I recommend Ye Olde Steak House on Chapman Hwy in South Knoxville. http://www.yeoldesteakhouse.com/

Some great suggestions here already! A few additions:

For live music, check out the entertainment listings at www.metropulse.com. Their event calendar is the best in town. Print editions come out every Thursday. I can't remember if someone else mentioned the lovely Bijou Theatre already... it's smaller than the Tennessee, but has fabulous acoustics and is wonderful for shows. Might want to check their schedule for that weekend.

Fantasy of Trees will be happening at the downtown convention center that weekend. It's a fundraiser for Children's Hospital and is a great family event, but it's popular with couples, too. It's like a Christmas wonderland... they turn the lights down, there are dozens of lavishly decorated trees, gingerbread houses, also live performances of Christmas music. It's fun to wander around and look at everything!

For local eats, downtown has so much to choose from now... you can get just about anything, especially around Market Square or Gay St. French, Italian, Mexican, seafood, American, vegetarian, Arabic, Japanese... If you're downtown, walk over to Mast General Store on Gay St for some Christmas shopping. It's a great place to find gifts for hard-to-buy-for people!

Maryville would be a great city to live in, but having worked there in the past, I can't think of any activities worth a special trip for an out-of-town visitor.

Here's the only thing I could remember from my years in the area for Maryville. Haven't been by there in years but I'm sure you can't go inside or on the grounds now. It's a really odd thing to see. www.blountweb.com/millenniummanor/news02.htm

Has anyone gone to see a WDVX Blueplate special performance? My boyfriend and I were contemplating checking that out, if we do end up in Knoxville.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have... the acts vary daily, usually folksy Americana music. It's free at noon M-F, check the holiday schedule. It's a small room and it's been crowded every time I've gone, so get there EARLY!

I think the Tennessee Shines show is going Wednesday night at the Bijou downtown... Ashley Cleveland (grammy winner) is on the lineup plus a few others... that should be a great show, too!
