Good place to stay before catching ferry from Ardrossan

On a Friday in mid-May we will be travelling up to Ardrossan (from Nottingham) to catch the ferry across to Brodrick on Saturday morning to start our week's holiday on the Isle of Arran. Does anybody have any suggestions on which villages / towns might be worth looking at for our overnight stay? We are hoping to get a decent, comfortable B and B within walking distance of a nice restaurant / pub with food, within half an hour’s drive of the ferry. Somewhere south of Ardrossan perhaps? Many thanks in advance.

I'd suggest Largs, as it's a pleasant seaside town, but you could also look at West Kilbride.

South of Ardrossan, I'd say Troon. Plenty of good B&Bs, restaurants, etc, and you can get straight on to the Irvine bypass, and you arrive at the north end of Ardrossan about 1 mile from the ferry, without having seen a traffic light in 12 miles.
