Discovered their website while surfing the web looking for a better edited travel guide than Fodors or Frommers. Not that Fodors or Frommers aren’t very helpful, but I find if you know very little about a destination, it is essential to have another more detailed source in order to avoid overrated places and to discover gems that might get short shrift in a regular guide with space limitations.
Detail is what you will get with Secret Scotland. Very interesting concept. They have compiled sample 1 and 2 week trips with different focuses, some quite specific and some more general. You can see the general outline on the website and then purchase the itineraries for roughly 20£ each. You can also purchase companion accommodation guides for roughly the same price. If you wish, they will also provide customized planning. In our case, we purchased 2 different itineraries and mixed and matched according to our interests.
When you download the guides, you will be astounded by the detail. Literally hundreds of pages with very detailed information about attractions and driving instructions. Despite the amount of information, it was organized in such a way that you can sift through to get what you need and then delve into the detail for more precise info. when firming up your plans.
My one critique, the accommodation information needs some minor updating. We were mostly very pleased with the edited list, but did have one disappointing experience.
Overall, an outstanding resource. Our trip was a great success because of their guide.
