days out from Tobermorey

We will be in Tobermorey in September, staying 3 nights. Will want to do some walking but what drive able days out would you recommend?

Is the circular route - heading west out of T. - a good idea? The road seems to reach Ulva, then turn northwards back towards Argos and then home to T.

Can Ulva be reached by road or on foot?

Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi,

There are various destinations you can head for. You have already identified the 50 mile circular route (Dervaig, Calgary, Torloisk, Ulva Ferry, Gruline, Salen and Tobermory). Then there is Tobermory to Fionnphort (for Iona). There are two routes to Fionnphort 1) Tob, Salen then Scenic Route via Gruline, Gribun, Pennyghael, Fionnphort or 2) Tob, Salen, Craignure, Glen More, Pennyghael and Fionnphort. You can mix the journey from say taking 1 out and 2 return or 2 out and 1 return. You will have then covered all the 'main' roads on the island.

Ulva is reached by car to Ulva Ferry and then taking the 5 minute crossing by ferry boat.

Hope this helps.

Ian

You could contact Bowmans tours to see if you could join their trip to Iona and Staffa, though you can easily drive to Fionnphort and do it yourself.

http://www.bowmanstours.co.uk/

"will want to do some walking" the big walk is Ben More, which starts from the roadside at Dhiseig, a road which is on the southern road circuit on Mull

walkhighlands.co.uk/mull/ben-more-mull.shtml

(by clicking through onto their route maps you can pan around and zoom in or out and see that Ulva is indeed separated from Mull by enough water to get more than your toes wet.)

PS If you're looking for a decent beach, try Calgary Bay. If you want a wild but reasonably gentle walk, try the minor road going north from Calgary village. There's a gate across the road at Sunipol with a couple of farms beyond where there are ruins of old abandoned townships. Rough pasture and stony outcrops, and moorland. But I suspect some of this area may now have young forestry.

If we take the ferry to Iona as foot passengers, is the Abbey within walking distance of the terminal?.....could take the car but the island doesn't look that big.

You can't take your car to Iona, the ferry is for foot passengers only. The Abbey is a very easy stroll from the ferry terminal.

Just a quick note to inform you that West Coast Motors take over the running of Bowmans coaches from the 24th June. They will be running to the same timetable, Sad day to see the last Bowmans coach on the island.

thanks for the update MullMad.

Can someone advise on walking conditions....we're not hardy hikers but do like a gentle stroll...do we need walking boots, wellies or will good quality trainers suffice?
