What to see in the Trossachs?

We will be in Stirling in May and want to explore The Trossachs area. What can we see if we wanted to take a drive there and explore the town of Stirling the same day?

Drive up to Loch Katrine and if time allows take a trip on the SS Sir Walter Scott

http://www.lochkatrine.com/

Loch Katrine and the surrounding area is absolutely beautiful.

Another interesting stop if you are into that sort of thing is the Doune Antiques Centre

http://www.scottish-antiques.com/

they have a nice restaurant which is a nice lunch stop.

You can also stop off in Callender which has the usual mix of tourist shops and cafes

Hi!

Have a look at www.trossachs.co.uk

Also if you type 'trossachs' in the search box on the main Scotland page it comes up with previous discussions, tips and hints.

The Trossachs are absolutely outstanding; well known by local Scots, but sadly sometimes bypassed by US and English visitors. Just by looking at a map you can see where to go and it is very easy to do a circular with no repeat roads/towns.

Take the A811 road from Stirling through Drymen (pronounced - Dri men) to Balloch right on Loch Lomond side; various tourist attractions, good and tat. From Balloch take A82 right up Loch Lomond with the loch visible most of the time; main road BUT quite twist; stop in frequent laybys for views and a "paddle" in the very cold Loch. You will see "Ben Lomond" (Ben is a high mountain) and other Bens and hills.

Continue on A82 (don't take A83 - lovely but you haven't time) to head of Loch Lomond and on to Crianlarich. Then A85 to Lochearnhead (Loch Earn nearby and you are now heading south again). From there take A84 south to Kilmahog (tiny) turn right on to A821 and follow signs to Loch Katrine (it's slightly off the main road; park; and walk alongside this beautiful loch dependent on your time).

Back on to A821 south to Aberfoyle (nice little town).

Then A81 past LAKE Menteith (the only lake in Scotland). THEN a choice depending on time; if an hour to spare, continue on A81 to Callander (nice touristy town) then A84 south to Stirling. If short of time, miss Callander after Lake Menteith and take A873 joining with A84 to Stirling.

In May the long nights will have started (day light till about 9pm) so you can easily do this fantastic trip in a day. It will spoil it a bit if your try to do Stirling on same day. Try to find a halfday for Stirling and its excellent castle.
