3 day camper van trip, leaving from Callander

Hi there, looking for some suggestions please. We're Camper van novices and picking up a retro VW van from Highdays and Holidays in Callander end of September for 3 nights. Had thought about Skye but thinking perhaps a bit ambitious for our first trip out. Where else would be good? wild camping a possibility, looking for nice loch or sea views. Not too far for last night as we need to drop van off for 10am. Any advice gratefully received.

Glen Coe would be an obvious destination. Carry on up to Mallaig and back home via Oban?

I've camped near Ardnamurchan but in a tent.

Sounds a plan, think top speed is about 50mph, so whatever we do, it'll be slowly!

How about ....one night Oban

One night Morar sands

And your last night in the Trossachs/Loch Earn?

Oh choices choices, how long do you reckon Oban is from Callander?

If you want to do distances and timings your most reliable bet would be the AA or viamichelin. Here's the AA link. They're fairly realistic about times, but don;t include any stops.

http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp

1 1/2 hours to Oban, 2 hours if you're taking your time.

Suggestion: Callander - Oban; then Southwards, via Kilmartin and Inveraray to Loch Lomond; round the South end of Loch Lomond and stop somewhere near Aberfoyle. From there it's about 1/2 an hour back to Callander.

I think that gives you a whole pile of geography and history for your three days ... if you research these areas you'll find there's a lot to do. And it avoids going and returning on the same route.

And that's about 6 - 7 hours driving in total over the three days, so plenty time to get out and see things. And you could do Callander - Glencoe - Oban which is a bit longer, maybe another hour.

There are loads of options if you're willing to use minor roads, and if you're happy to drive longer each day.

Callander to Mallaig would be about 3 hours, you'd need a break near FW, and you'd probably return to Fort William via the same road.

The coast road from Glencoe to Oban and southwards to Kilmartin is loch after loch - and you're looking westwards over the islands of the Inner Hebrides; that's why I suggested the route really.

You're in the lap of the Gods regarding weather - but if it's clear skies you might be lucky enough to get a spectacularly orange sunset sometime after 7 pm.

And the Trossachs around Aberfoyle have equally beautiful inland lochs ... in fact most of the route has water fairly close to hand ...

Many thanks guys! Will pass all your suggestions to hubby who will be doing the driving. I'm sure the sun will shine, if not we'll go well prepared anyway. I'll report back on our experience. So grateful for your input x
