I would suggest you stay downtown so that you can walk or take the trolley to many attractions. There are hotels in all price ranges. The low end would include Sleep Inn or Comfort Inn; mid priced would include Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Doubletree, Courtyard or Residence Inn; high end would be the Westin, Peabody or Madison. Others will chime in with their ideas as well.

Things to do will depend on your likes. Memphis has lots of musical related attractions including Graceland, Sun Studio, Stax, Rock and Soul, Beale Street and Gibson Guitar factory tours. Other things that you might enjoy are the zoo (world class), Civil Rights Museum, Cotton Museum, Ornamental Metal Museum, Pink Palace, Lichterman Nature Center, the ducks at the Peabody or Elmwood Cemetery. You don't say how old your kids are, but the Fire Museum and the Children's Museum appeal to young kids. Also, Mud Island is great, but is only open seasonally. You didn't specify when you plan to come.

Day trips from Memphis might include Reelfoot State Park, Shiloh Nat'l Military Park or Tupelo, MS for starters. The adults might enjoy Tunica, MS with its many casinos. Harrahs offers a large arcade and child care area on their casino property.

As for dining, you should try some Memphis barbeque. Downtown you have Rendezvous or Leonards. Slightly away from downtown you have Neelys or Interstate. Visit either of those during the day. Beyond that you have a multitude of barbeque joints all over the city. Your group might enjoy Marlowes, located near Graceland. For your kids, try the Flying Fish or Kooky Kanuck downtown. Other good places in general downtown would be Gus's Fried Chicken, Blue Plate, the Arcade or any of the many restaurants on Beale.

Your kids will be able to sit in a restaurant with you on Beale, eat and enjoy live music. They will not be allowed in somewhere that is strictly a club or be allowed in anywhere smoking is allowed because of state laws. Also, there is plenty of music to hear on the street as well. They will likely enjoy poking around A. Schwabs store on Beale as well.
