Memphis to Atlanta airport

I was going to drive all the way from Memphis to Atlanta Airport on the 26th of Oct but since my flight is at 3:30pm, if anything goes wrong I could have problems. Therefore I plan to stay somewhere on the way and still see some of the delta area. I was thinking of Birmingham in Alabama. Anybody have any recommandations of have made this trip before?

Your time frame is a bit short to actually get a feel for the Delta and arrive on time in Atlanta. Remember that Atlanta is a rather big city with traffic issues which can add time to your journey, and I'm sure you know that you should be at the airport a couple of hours ahead of departure. If you drove south from Memphis to Clarkesdale to spend the night before heading east toward Atlanta the next morning you could take in a Blues club and view a lot of flat Delta land enroute, but within a twenty four hour window you would have to traverse seven or eight hours of unfamiliar highways, much of which aren't interstates just to have been in the Delta for a while. You would be better advised to travel Hwy. 78 through Tupelo, maybe overnighting there, take in Elivis Presley's birthplace early and move out on a quick schedule to Atlanta.

There were a lot of Olympic athletes that didn't make their events on time when the Olympics were there

Thanks guys. To be honest I think Birmingham or around that area would be the safer bet. I just checked and it is 5 hours from Tupelo to Hartsford Airport and that is with no traffic. That would as we say in Ireland "cutting it very fine". I think the best option is to stay over for some lunch in the Delta Area. - before heading on later that day. any recommandations? Clarksdale looks quite a bit south. I just want to stay over in Alabama. I am not going to see anything, just stay over and get on the road about 8 in the morning to make sure I get there by 12:30 in the afternoon.

While I can't reccomend an area in Birmingham, there are plenty of chain hotels along their interstates that would suit your needs. I would suggest going on their forum to ask about a safe, convenient area.

Stop by Ground Zero Blues Club for lunch in Clarksdale. Abe's has good BBQ. The Ranchero has great steaks, BBQ and seafood.
